I have spent an inordinate amount of my life in front of a computer, so naturally I am drawn to a hobby that is the exact opposite of that. As a teenager, I had learned how to weld through 4-H. A few years ago, I got myself a welder, ordered some metal and got to work.
Now I am working on mastering the art of creating simple shapes that aerialists can dance on. The pieces I make have to be strong. In order to hold a dancer, a piece should be strong enough to lift a small car. I like to make new, playful apparatuses – and of course, they’re more fun if they spin and if you can do a wide variety of moves in them. Here are some of my favorite pieces with some of my favorite Nashville performers as models.
